Dry Signals
ENPT

The soundscape you will hear is composed of multiple recordings made in various towns and cities in Ceará, a state in the northeastern region of Brazil, in 2015, the fourth year of an ongoing drought. Although the accompanying painting, static and reductive, might suggest a timeless ethnographic present in a nameless town as imagined and painted by Cearense artist Manoel Neto, I consider this an interactive acoustic ethnography that layers a normative vision of Ceará’s interior with the specific, diverse, and meaningful contexts in which the various sounds were recorded. Through this combination of sound, image, and text, I am intending to play with the tropes of this place, examining their constructedness, their materiality, and the interaction between the two. Explore the soundscape by tapping on different spots on the painting.
